Teaching Objectives and Assessment Methods

Course: HIND 105 001   
Teaching Objectives:

The overall Goal of this course is to prepare the students to Novice-Mid / Novice High proficiency level
of Hindi.  By the end of the semester, students will be able to:

Text type:  
Able to satisfy partially the requirement of basic communicative exchanges, produce and comprehend
simple phrases, simple sentences by relying heavily on memorized utterances.

Content Objectives:  

  • They will learn recognize, read, write and speaking Hindi / Devanagari Script and sound system.
  •  learn, read, write and speak vocabulary related to Topics:
    Self, Calendar/Time, Numbers, colors, shapes, college /class room, pet/animals, fruits and family
    relations, Weather/Seasons, parts of body, family relations (immediate kins) friends, home, places
    Directions, and  daily routine activities.
    Indian Culture related topics:  Indian Festivals, Indian clothing, Indian food items /beverage,
    names of Indian historical places, and Indian National Symbols.

Language objectives:     

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the distinctive, sounds, vocabulary, and sentence structure of Hindi.
  •  Able to exchange culture related greetings in appropriate manners with Indian friend.
  • Can ask and respond to a limited number of simple yes no questions and simple information questions.
  • Can make some basic requests and short sentences.
  • Develop an awareness of key language differences and similarities and identify distinctive (e.g., culture-specific)
    Hindi language features (i.e., as contrasted with English)
  • Can express likings and disliking about things.
  • They will be able to use some verbs in command /roots, polite imperative and present habitual forms.
  • They will show the ability to qualify nouns using a few adjectives and possessive adjectives, and use
    common adverbs and post positions.
  • Able to change numbers of the basic vocabulary words.
  • Able to comprehend a short narration or dialogue.
  • Able to write 10-12 sentences on above mentioned topics.

Assessment Methods:  HIND 105 001

  • 11 in-Class lesson Quizzes ( Oral, Listening, reading , writing)
  • 3 Exams, One on site and two take –home
  • Photo Story on assigned topic (with writing and voice recording )
  • 2 voice recordings on Owl space.
  • 1 Skit Presentation ( group activity )
  • 1 skit writing ( Individual)
  • 1 individual presentation( Final day) Poem/ speech/ talk (1-3 min)
  • Final Presentation in the form of charts/model or Power Point Presentation from the
    topic of Indian cultural theme.

Course: HIND 201 001                  

The overall Goal of this course is to prepare the students to Novice High/ Intermediate low proficiency level
of Hindi. By the end of the semester; diligent participants should be able to:

Text type:
Able to create new expressions through combining and recombining learned elements though primarily in a
reactive mode. Can initiate, minimally sustain, and close in a simple way basic communicative task; ask and
answer questions; and use basic grammar with limited control.

Content Objectives:

  •  To be able to understand, read, write and speak simple/intermediate texts. Instructions/ directions/
    signs. Show  progress in reading, writing  and speaking comprehension of the Hindi script.
  • The course contents are based on the topic ‘ Virtual Tour to India’, so the students will be able
    to learn, read, write and understand  vocabulary related to the topics:

States of India, and can locate few important Cities on the map of India, Indian Currency, buying Air/ Bus/
train tickets, Buy and negotiate with shopkeepers, Indian means of transport, directions from one place to
another, In the Airplane with Air hostess, make tour plan, Names of some important Cities and historical
places in these cities: New Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Simla. Shopping in Indian Bazaar, eating in
Indian restaurants.They will also learn Cultural related vocabulary, and expressions.

Language objectives:    

  •  Writing: Improve script knowledge, should be able to meet a number of practical writing.
  • Speaking:  Although the speakers are mostly reactive, they consistently create new utterances.
    Can make statements,and ask and answer questions in a restricted manner in a simple
    face – to – face conversation in a familiar context.
  • Use Hindi in self satisfying and meaningful ways (i.e. polite conversations, light readings and
    written self expression in the language). It will develop the structural and communicative
    strategies that are necessary to develop linguistic skills for use in real world situations.
  • Initiate, sustain and close a general conversation
  • Can make weekly plan, plan a tour, and can talk, but speech lacks spontaneity.
  • Extract the main idea and information from texts featuring description and narration.
  • Comprehend and write short narration or dialogue in simple present, past and
    future indefinite sentence.
  • Write 15-20 sentences related to topics mentioned.

  • 11 in-Class lesson Quizzes ( Oral, Listening, reading , writing)
  • 3 Exams, One on site and two take –home
